About the Project

This project started as an assignement for my photography class at Santa Monica College. But after I  turned it in, I realized that I wasn't ready for it to end.

This is a personal project. Journalistic standards of objectivity prevent a writer or photographer from giving anything (money, gifts, and yes, even food) to a subject in exchange for access. It's easy to understand how that could compromise unbiased media standards.

And while I thought about changing my tactics in the hopes of this being published some day, ultimately I decided against it. I have been feeding transient people since before I brought a camera and recorder into the mix. These people have already lost so much, and need so much more than I offer, that I can't change my behavior without feeling selfish.

Maybe one day this project will morph, or some other new development will cause me to change this position. But for now, I will continue to give them a bite to eat, give them a choice, give them someone to listen to them, and maybe, give them a little bit of hope.

About the Photographer

Twilight took this picture of me!

Originally from Denver, CO, I graduated magna cum laude in 2008 from the College of Santa Fe in New Mexico with a BFA in Technical Theater and Stage Management.

Having worked as a stage manager and lighting electrician on more than 100 shows and events, I fell into the props department for several studio films (including Hangover Part II, Savages, Cowboys and Aliens), and later headed prop/art departments on non-union productions such as Kevin Spacey’s Jameson First Shot and James Franco’s Sundance Selection Interior. Leather Bar.

While this was all very creative, exciting and fun, I realized my profession lacked the ability to address critical social issues through my work, ultimately deciding that for me, proactively affecting change had to become a larger priority in my life.
